Abstract

In order to ascertain the exploration potential of the Lijiapan Shale in the Chang 9 Member of the Ganquan-Fuxian exploration area, Ordos Basin. To this end, a comprehensive dataset encompassing abundant core, logging, mud logging, and geochemical analysis data was utilized. A series of systematic studies were conducted on the geological distribution characteristics, geochemical characteristics, hydrocarbon generation and expulsion laws, as well as the quantitative evaluation of the resource potential of this member's shale. The results are as follows. The shale thickness ranges from 5 to 20 meters, and the high-thickness zones are distributed in the NW-SE direction in the Xiasiwan-Fuxian Area. 80% of the samples have TOC (total organic carbon) content higher than 2%, with organic matter dominated by Type Ⅰ-Ⅱ1 kerogen, and the vitrinite reflectance (Ro) ranges from 0.7% to 1.3%, indicating that the organic matter has generally entered the mature stage. The hydrocarbon generation intensity is mainly 20×104~140×104 t/km2, and the hydrocarbon expulsion intensity is 10×104 ~50×104 t/km2, with high-value zones concentrated in the Xiasiwan-Daozhen-Zhangcunyi Area. The Class Ⅰ potential area has a hydrocarbon generation volume of 12.69×108 t and a hydrocarbon expulsion volume of 4.60×108 t, while the Class Ⅱ potential area has a hydrocarbon generation volume of 20.03×108 t and a hydrocarbon expulsion volume of 7.70×108 t, both of which are regarded as the major target zones for subsequent shale oil exploration. It has been determined that the Lijiapan Shale of the Chang 9 Member is of medium-to-good quality, a mature source rock with effective hydrocarbon-expelling potential, and it is capable of forming a resource pattern of “dual-source coexistence and three-dimensional exploration” with the Chang 7 Member. This understanding overcomes the previous limited evaluation of the resource potential of this member and provides an important geological basis for the deployment of shale oil exploration in the southeastern Ordos Basin.
