In recent years, the Wanhuachang Titanium Deposit with large prospecting potential has been newly discovered in the northeastern Yunnan region. By means of field investigations, lithofacies identification, and other methods, the geological characteristics and discovery significance of the deposit were preliminarily summarized. The research results show that the Wanhuachang Titanium Deposit is located at the southwestern margin of the Yangtze Block. The ore bodies are mainly hosted in the contact zone between the Upper Permian Xuanwei Formation and the Emeishan Basalt, occurring in a stratoid form. Their spatial distribution is controlled by the Luobugu Syncline structure, showing an overall “U”-shaped morphological feature. The surface engineering-controlled length of the ore bodies is approximately 6 000 m, with an average thickness of 10.3 m. The grade of TiO2 ranges from 3.08% to 17.20%, associated with various metallic elements such as aluminum, iron, and vanadium. The main ore-hosting rocks of the deposit include purplish-red ferruginous mudstone, grayish-white aluminous rock, and yellow claystone. Analysis of ore mineral composition indicates that titanium-bearing minerals are dominated by anatase and rutile, accompanied by associated nonmetallic minerals including kaolinite, quartz, and sericite. Comprehensive analysis suggests that the ore bodies are strictly controlled by strata, with no hydrothermal minerals or veinlet cross-cutting phenomena observed. The ore-bearing horizon exhibits typical clastic sedimentary characteristics. The deposit features are similar to those of the Yanxigou Sedimentary Titanium Deposit in Ya’an, Sichuan, and it is classified as a sedimentary titanium deposit genetically related to the sedimentary processes of the Xuanwei Formation. This genetic type of titanium deposit represents the first discovery in the northeastern Yunnan region. The discovery of this deposit not only expands the exploration prospects of sedimentary titanium deposits and enriches the metallogenic theory of titanium deposits, but also fills the gap in the distribution of titanium resources in northeastern Yunnan, providing a new direction for regional prospecting work.
