Energy storage configuration is regarded as a key approach for enhancing the renewable energy accommodation capacity of new power systems. Commonly adopted forms of energy storage include flywheel energy storage, electrochemical energy storage, and pumped hydro storage, among others, with significant variations observed in charging and discharging rates, costs, and applicable scenarios. In the planning of multi-type energy storage systems, investment costs and operational benefits must be holistically considered to achieve an economical and efficient configuration. A multi-dimensional economic characteristic analysis framework for multi-type energy storage configuration was proposed based on time-series production simulation. First, a time-series production simulation model was constructed with the objective of minimizing the total system operating cost. This model comprehensively incorporates constraints such as renewable energy output fluctuations, energy storage charging and discharging strategies, and operational efficiency, enabling the system's operational costs to be effectively evaluated over long time scales. Subsequently, based on the operational benefits obtained from simulations and energy storage configuration costs, an evaluation index system for the input-output ratio of energy storage was established, providing a quantitative basis for economic analysis of energy storage. It is demonstrated through simulations that a reasonable configuration of energy storage can effectively reduce the system's wind and solar curtailment rates and enhance the level of renewable energy accommodation. The nonlinear relationship between energy storage “benefits and capacity” is revealed, along with the diminishing marginal effect, and the existence of an optimal economic configuration range is identified. A critical theoretical foundation and decision-making tool are provided by this research for the precise investment and optimal configuration of energy storage systems in practical engineering applications.
