To address the issue that false signals interfere with the monitoring accuracy of rubber plug position under complex well conditions, an innovative design method for signal-generating short sections based on transient dynamics was proposed. By establishing a transient dynamics model of the rubber plug-short section and integrating a multi-parameter coupling evaluation system including stress-strain, contact stress, bearing reaction, and structural parameters, the sealing performance and dynamic evolution law of resistance between the rubber plug and the short section were thoroughly investigated. Simulation and experimental results show that the inner diameter of the short section dominates stress and strain: when the rubber plug passes through a short section with an inner diameter of 112 mm, its maximum Mises stress, maximum principal strain, and maximum contact stress surge by 210.7%, 292.5%, and 549.4% respectively compared with those when not passing through the short section, which becomes the main cause of rubber plug sticking. The engineering recommendation is that the inner diameter of the short section should be ≥116 mm. The width of the short section governs contact stability: when the width exceeds the rubber cup spacing (50 mm), the contact stress distribution of each rubber cup tends to be stable, so the engineering recommendation is that the width of the short section should be larger than the rubber cup spacing of the rubber plug. Analysis of bearing reaction response indicates that a decrease in inner diameter leads to a sharp increase in the peak bearing reaction (the increase rate reaches 427.7% for an inner diameter of 112 mm compared with that when not passing through the short section), while an increase in short section width significantly expands the peak action interval (the increase rate reaches 100% when the width>195 mm). Based on this, a dual-parameter signal regulation strategy was proposed: by directionally designing the mapping relationships between short section inner diameter-bearing reaction peak-signal amplitude and short section width-peak action interval-pulse width, pressure signals with distinguishable characteristics are generated. This strategy improves the recognition accuracy of characteristic signals to over 95%, effectively reducing the risk of false signal misjudgment.
