The shale oil reservoir in the Chang 7 Member of the Ordos Basin is characterized by complex geological conditions and considerable burial depth, resulting in generally low productivity in horizontal wells. Consequently, the optimization of fracturing engineering sweet spots becomes particularly challenging. PCA (principal component analysis) was systematically applied for the first time to quantitatively evaluate engineering sweet spots in the Chang 7 shale oil reservoir of the Ordos Basin, effectively addressing the limitations of existing methods in extracting practical engineering sweet spot factors when processing large volumes of data. Starting from nine key engineering sweet spot factors—including core density, elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and confining pressure—the principal components were physically interpreted as the brittleness index, geostress anisotropy coefficient, and clay content. These three principal components collectively account for 82.471% of the total variance, capturing most of the critical information. Compared with traditional approaches, the evaluation results obtained in this study demonstrate significant improvements in both accuracy and engineering applicability. Through interpretation of actual well-logging curves, dominant reservoir intervals are precisely identified at depths of 2 123~2 131 m, 2 138~2 142 m, 2 145~2 148 m, and 2 156~2 159 m. These results are more accurate than those derived from partial datasets and provide a reliable basis for engineering implementation. The methodology presented herein not only offers a scientific approach for the efficient development of shale oil in the Ordos Basin but also establishes a novel framework for engineering sweet spot evaluation in similar reservoirs.
