Abstract

Aero-engine casing containment design is a core element of flight safety. To ensure flight safety, the casing must have the ability to prevent secondary damage from broken blades penetrating the casing. The containment testing is an effective way to verify that the casing is well contained. Starting with containment definitions and regulatory requirements, the research advances of ballistic impact test, component containment test and engine containment test were introduced in detail. The current research status of the key technologies involved in the component containment test, such as numerical simulation, blade separation at predetermined speed, temperature calibration and high-speed camera were described. Furthermore, the current research limitations were summarized. The future research should be focused on building component level test platforms under service conditions and establishing scientifically standardized standards for engine containment verification. The study has important engineering value for raising the level of aviation safety protection.
