Abstract

A systematic evaluation was conducted to assess the effects of oral “Spleen-invigorating” Chinese herbal medicine on postoperative immune and gastrointestinal function recovery in CRC(colorectal cancer) patients, aiming to provide evidence-based medical evidence for clinical prescription selection. A comprehensive search was performed in Chinese databases(CNKI, VIP, WanFang, CBM) and international databases(Pubmed, MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library) up to December 15, 2023. RCTs (randomized controlled trials) comparing “Spleen-invigorating” herbs with conventional nutrition/chemotherapy/blank control were selected. Immune function indicators(CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD4+/CD8+ ratio, IgA, IgM, IgG) and gastrointestinal function indicators(bowel sound recovery time, flatus time) with corresponding 95% CI(confidence intervals) were analyzed. Heterogeneity testing, sensitivity analysis, funnel plot inspection, and meta-regression analysis were subsequently performed. Twenty-two studies involving 1 938 cases(970 in intervention group, 968 in control group) were included. Pooled analysis demonstrated that “Spleen-invigorating” herbs significantly enhanced postoperative T-cell immune function(CD3+, CD4+, CD4+/CD8+ ratio) and humoral immune function(IgA, IgM, IgG), CD8+ levels were significantly reduced. Gastrointestinal function recovery was notably improved(bowel sound recovery time, flatus time). In conclusion, oral administration of “Spleen-invigorating” Chinese herbal medicine is shown to effectively improve postoperative immune function and gastrointestinal recovery in CRC patients, with demonstrated safety and reliability in clinical application.
