Abstract

The Beisantai area is situated in the eastern Junggar Basin, where the Neogene Shawan Formation serves as the primary target horizon for uranium exploration. As a key area under the "Three-New" prospecting strategy for the new round of uranium exploration, this region exhibits favorable metallogenic conditions for sandstone-type uranium deposits, though exploration efforts remain relatively underdeveloped. The uranium metallogenic conditions of the Shawan Formation were comprehensively analyzed through core logging, petrographic identification, scanning electron microscopy, and geochemical analysis, guided by the metallogenic theory of interlayer oxidation zone sandstone-type uranium deposits. The investigation focused on uranium sources, tectonic setting, lithologylithofacies characteristics, groundwater dynamics, redox conditions, and epigenetic alterations. The results show that the Shawan Formation in Beisantai has experienced minimal tectonic modification post-deposition, with formation dip angles ranging between 2° and 10°. The target horizon comprises thick sandstones and sandy conglomerates of fan-delta origin, providing favorable reservoir space for uranium mineralization. The stable mudstone aquicludes overlying and underlying the sandstone units create a "mud-sand-mud" vertical configuration conducive to interlayer oxidation zone development. Furthermore, hydrocarbon alteration from deep petroleum systems enhances reducing conditions within the strata, demonstrating significant prospecting potential. Exploration priorities should focus on areas with hydrocarbon enrichment, fault systems, sand bodies, and epigenetic alteration development.
