Abstract

In order to optimize the flotation process and design, the level set method was used to simulate the migration characteristics of tiny bubbles in the flotation cell. The influence of surface tension, viscosity, and contact angle on the mobility behavior of the bubble in interaction with both static and dynamic particles were investigated. The findings reveale that the bubble rising velocity undergoing contact with the particle can be divided into three stages: bubble-particle contact, bubble-particle separation and sustained rise. The time from the contact between the bubble and the moving particle to the maximum deformation is 0.003 s shorter than the time of the same interaction with stationary particle. During these varying stages, the bubble rising velocity is directly proportional to surface tension and inversely proportional to fluid viscosity, and the influence of the fluid viscosity on the bubble velocity amplitude is smaller than that of the surface tension. The larger the contact angle is, the smaller the change of bubble velocity during the contact process. Moreover, the change of bubble velocity when interacting with dynamic particle is obviously smaller than that observed during interactions with static particle, with a maximum discrepancy of 0.295 m/s.
