During natural gas exploitation, solid particles such as formation sand are inevitably produced alongside the extracted gas. Larger particles can be removed by the separators, however, micron-sized particles easily enter the gathering and transportation pipelines with the gas, resulting in deposition that poses significant risks to pipeline operational safety. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to investigate the deposition behavior of micron-sized solid particles within natural gas pipelines. User defined functions were developed to specify critical deposition velocity and restitution coefficients, particle deposition behavior was analyzed, the response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized to establish quantitative relationships between deposition rates and influencing factors. The findings reveal contrasting deposition rate trends for small and large particles under varying flow velocities. Under constant flow velocity, deposition rates exhibit similar trends, with large particles showing deposition rates of approximately 40% at higher flow velocities and up to 70% at lower flow velocities. Furthermore, significant differences are observed in particle deposition locations across various pipeline geometries. Finally, the RSM analysis identified the slope of the downstream pipeline section and particle size as critical factors influencing deposition rates.
