Abstract

In the quest to explore suitable construction methods for large-scale soft rock tunnels under high ground stress, the Tongzi Tunnel was used as an engineering background. Through on-site monitoring and numerical simulation, the suitability of three construction techniques [three-step method, cross diaphragm (CD) method], double-side wall guiding pit method) under different high ground stresses were explored. The merits and demerits of construction methods were evaluated based on aspects such as surrounding rock deformation, construction cost, and construction progress. The results show for level Ⅴ surrounding rock when the tunnel buried depth is 300 m to 400 m, the three-step method is applicable. When the buried depth is 500 m, the Cross Diaphragm method is suitable. When the buried depth is 600 m, the double-side wall guiding pit method is applicable. For level Ⅳ surrounding rock, when the tunnel buried depth is between 300 m to 600 m, the three-step method is applicable in all cases.
